MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation wants private players to develop municipal markets in less prime areas in distant suburbs while experimenting with the idea of developing markets in the island city areas on its own.

Even as it is fine-tuning guidelines for making amendments to the existing market development policy, the civic administration, which has regularly altered its stand over market redevelopment ever since corporation’s approval to the controversial private development of Crawford Market on September 11, continues to invite private players to discuss redevelopment of suburban markets.

On Thursday, proposals for the private development of two markets at Tilak Nagar in Chembur (Manthan Developers) and Sant Jalaram Bapu Marg in Mulund (Ankur Developers) were scrutinised by civic officials.

Assistant municipal commissioner Anand Wagralkar said, “Of the 60 markets that the administration plans to take up for development, over 15 are in the suburban belt from Goregaon to Dahisar in the western suburbs and Kurla to Bhandup in the eastern. As the market value of these plots is low, we plan to develop them through private participation. Seven of these markets are in the final stages of approval.”

BMC’s stand comes weeks after the civic Improvements Committee okayed the modification of Development Control Rules allowing municipal markets to be redeveloped by BMC/MMRDA using a floor-space-index of 4. The space remaining after accommodation of existing vendors in these markets was to be used for rehabilitating commercial settlements affected by various development projects.
