MUMBAI: In an attempt to cut fuel cost and reduce pollution, 25 cool cab owners of the Mumbai Taximen Union were given Tata Indigo vehicles in Powai on Wednesday as a replacement for their diesel-run Tata Indica cars.

The new cars were handed over to 25 drivers on the occasion of Dhanteras. However, all the cabs currently bear registration numbers of Thane regional transport office.

President of the Mumbai Taximen union told DNA that all the 25 cars were kept in the Thane showroom before being brought to Mumbai on Wednesday. “According to the law, taxis having Thane registration or any other city other than Mumbai are not allowed to ply in Mumbai, however these cool cab owners have been given transfer certificates and have been given seven days to get them registered with the Mumbai RTO,” Quadros said.

Stating that the existing cool cabs would run on diesel, Quadros said, “Diesel prices are increasing and cost of plying an air-conditioned vehicles is sky-rocketing. The new Tata Indigo cars are modified and fitted with a CNG kit which will make running the taxis cheaper.” Moreover, CNG is also an environmentally-friendly option as it is a non-pollutant while diesel is a major pollutant, he added.

There are plans to convert all cool cabs which are currently of Indica make into Indigo make. “Indigo cars are more efficient, spacious and stylish,” Quadros said. He further said that with the inclusion of Indigo cars, there are various types of car-models which are now plying in the city as taxis. “This gives people are variety of cars to choose from as taxis,” he added.

Quadros further said that Mumbai currently has the highest number of taxis plying as compared to any other city in the world. “There are 55,000 taxis in Mumbai which is highest when compared to any city in the world,” Quadros said.
