Looks at locations in Kerala, Rajasthan for building resorts

MUMBAI: Marriott International plans to come up with leisure destinations in India in its next phase of development. The US-based company has already started looking at various locations in Rajasthan and Kerala for resorts and hotels.

Geoff Garside, executive vice-president, Asia-Pacific, said: “We see a huge opportunity in India for leisure destinations.

With rising double income households and the five-day week culture catching up, people are looking to take short breaks within the country so domestic travel is bound to shoot up.”

Currently, most of Marriott’s customers in India are from the business class, staying put for official meeting and conventions.

But the company hopes that in a few years, 20% of the revenues will come from the leisure segment.

The hotel management company has begun a large convention centre in Hyderabad; another one is coming up in Pune. Now, it is also designing its hotels to cater to meeting for smaller groups of 50-100 people.

The first Marriott in India was Goa Marriott Resort which came up in 1999. It took seven years to reach its current status of six hotels with 1,500-room capacity.

Marriott expects to have 23 hotels in India with capacity of almost 6,000 rooms by 2010.

Its revenues the next fiscal is expected to go up to over $200 million next year from $100 million this year.

Sales volume for Marriot within India is growing in double digits and RevPar (Revenue per available room) was up 32% in the third quarter as a result of the country’s rapidly expanding economy and emerging middle class.
