BHUBANESHWAR: A 27-year old married woman was dragged out of a private bus and gangraped by four young men near the Sun Temple at Konark in Orissa's Puri district, police said on Tuesday.

Four persons were arrested in the case and produced in court Tuesday where they were remanded to judicial custody.

The woman, accompanied by a relative, was returning home at Satyabadi village near Puri on Sunday after visiting Konark in a bus when two youths travelling in the same vehicle asked the driver to stop and dragged the victim out before raping her at a nearby place, they said.

Two others, who probably followed the bus, also joined the duo and raped the woman, they added.

The bus, in which she was travelling, left amid little protest from passengers and the staff. The woman was later put on another bus by the accused, police said.

The arrested persons have identified as Santosh Swain, Gaurang Pradhan, R K Das and Devanand Parida of Gop, Konark and Baliguali areas, Konark police station in-charge S Panigrahi said.

"One of the four accused is a recovery agent for a financial company," Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Nimapada, Durlabh Singh said over phone.

Over half-a-dozen persons including staff of the two buses were detained to ascertain whether the incident took place with their complicity, police said.

Medical examination of the victim and the four accused has been conducted, they said adding that some condoms were found from the spot.

The accused were produced before a court on Tuesday and sent to jail, police said.

Condemning the incident, CPI-M's Orissa state committee asked the state government to take immediate steps to curb the activities of anti-social elements.

"Increasing activities of anti-social elements have created a fear psychosis among the people who have failed to muster courage to oppose criminals," it said in a statement.

It also demanded immediate arrest of those involved in a recent attack on state party secretary Janardan Pati and others at the CPI(M) office here.
