Narayan Rane succeeded where the civic body failed, albeit temporarily

The wedding of Narayan Rane’s son, Nilesh Rane, finally made the BMC take up the long pending task of clearing the Khar Pali road off hawkers, at least from November 1 till November 4.

“On Thursday, the BMC officials asked us to stop doing our business on the road till Sunday to avoid any inconvenience to the guests who were to come for Narayan Rane’s son’s wedding. We decided to follow the orders as it was a question of only few days”, said Dinanath Yadav, a fruit vendor who has three stalls on that road. Since Thursday, we are almost sitting idle but have managed to do some petty business. I have suffered losses but we cannot raise our voices, Yadav said.

Chandrasen Verma, owner of MN Gadhe fruit shop, a licensed vendor said, “I don’t know the exact reason of this drive, but this is one of the worst drives. BMC has been carrying out drives earlier, but this time they have been very strict. The BMC officials came and broke the glasses of a neighbouring shop and took away the material when the shop was opened for a while”. The hawkers say that although there were no cops around, the BMC officers were on constant supervision.

The entire scene, however, has appalled the residents of this area who had been continuously trying to get rid of these illegal hawkers since the last few years. The residents say that this has only proved that the BMC is capable of keeping the hawkers off the road if it wants to. Dr Rustom Sonawala, who has a clinic on this road says, “I was taken aback to see the changed topography of the Khar Pali road on Thursday. There was no noise pollution, the traffic was moving smooth and the road was completely free of hawkers.”

“Although the BMC officers regularly said that following the Supreme Court order on the hawking and non-hawking zones was not possible, this incidence has only shown that the BMC can keep away the hawkers without any police supervision”, he added. The H West ward officers were not available for comment.
