NEW DELHI: A major fire broke out in a mobile accessories shop in the capital's busy Karol Bagh market Sunday evening when the area was teeming with shoppers ahead of the Diwali festival, officials said.

According to fire department officials, at least 30 fire tenders were pressed in to douse the flames after the fire was reported from the shop on the Padam Singh road at around 4.00 p.m.

Police said the workers and the owner of the showroom were in the shop when the mishap occurred. It is suspected that one or two workers might be trapped inside.

A fire official was admitted to a hospital due to asphyxiation. His condition was stated to be stable.

"Fire fighting operations are still underway as flames have engulfed the building but they have been prevented from spreading to the adjoining shops. We expect the rescue operation might take a while," a fire official said in the evening.

The cause of the fire could not be ascertained, but officials said it could have been due to a short circuit. Property and goods worth millions of rupees was gutted in the fire.
