NEW DELHI: Diwali is round the corner and HR managers have a busy time as the occasion presents a great opportunity for them to 'touch' the lives of employees and their families.

The human resource managers believe that it is a right time to 'touch' the lives of their employees and on the eve of the festival they have become sort of event managers organising parties and gifts, giving a break to their routine works.

"We are organising a Diwali bash on 17th of this month and nearly 18,000 employees of the company along with their spouses and children have been invited," the country's biggest car maker Maruti's Chief General Manager (HR) S Y Siddiqui said.

The company would also be distributing chocolates and sweets apart from giving 50 per cent of the variable part of the employees' salary earned, during this time of the year, Siddiqui added.

"We have already organised our mega Diwali bash, apart from which we are gifting silver coins, a crystal bowl along with floating diyas and sweet boxes to all the employees," Times Internet Limited' Chief Manager HR Kavita Dasan said.

The celebrations would continue till a day before Diwali when the company would host a high tea party with an ethnic dress code apart from a customary Laxmi Puja done every year, Dasan added.

"This is a good time to create bonding with our employees and their families, this year we are gifting Sodexo Coupons so that they are able to shop with it as per their needs," Apollo International Chief Manager HR Vijay Rai said.

Apollo International is also organising Diwali Puja and get together where employees have been invited along with their families apart from distributing sweets, Rai added.

"Personalised cards and a tea set is what we have already gifted to our employees this year but the festivities will continue during this week," US-headquartered software firm Global Logic's Vice President (people and corporate development) Rajul Garg said.

Prior to Diwali, the company would be organising a 'Diwali Mela' where employees can come with their families, also employees would have to come in ethnic dresses and prizes for the best dressed person would be given, Garg adds.

"This is the best time to encourage employee engagement by making them feel a part of us," city-based food joint chain Nirula's Group VP HR Ajeet Chauhan said.

Nirulas hosted a party for its employees last Friday and would be gifting souvenirs, sweets and vaccum packed tiffin boxes to its employees, Chuahan added.

According to the industry association Assocham, Indian companies' spending on gifts and greetings during the current festive season is likely to increase by 48 per cent to Rs 2,000 crore as compared to Rs 1,350 crore last year.

According to Assocham, the sectors leading the way in terms of expenditure on gifts include pharmaceutical, IT and BPO, FMCG, real estate, tourism and aviation and retail.

"Apart from building the corporate image of company, both internally and externally, Diwali gifting helps strengthen goodwill of the company and foster long-lasting cordial relations with employees and associates," it said.
