LUCKNOW: The Samajwadi Party on Saturday accused the Congress of conspiring to damage party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's political career by using the CBI against him in the disproportionate assets case.

This followed after the Congress failed in its attempt to patch up with the Samajwadi Party, senior SP leader Amar Singh said here.

Referring to media reports about the CBI inquiry report against Yadav, Singh alleged emissaries of Congress president Sonia Gandhi had failed to convince him and party leader Ram Gopal Yadav to leave the Left and join hands with Congress.

"After our meeting with Left leaders recently, messengers of Gandhi tried to convince me and Ram Gopal Yadav to join hands with the Congress and leave Left parties," he said.

Amar Singh said he would disclose names of senior Congress leaders who approached him in this regard whenever needed.

He accused the Congress of trying to finish off Mulayam politically by using the CBI against him in the assets case.

On the contrary, in similar cases against Lalu Prasad and Mayawati, the Congress, in fact, helped these leaders, he alleged.

On the formation of the Third Front, Singh merely said both the SP and the Left were coming together on various issues including the plight of farmers

Amar Singh alleged the Congress party was anti-Muslim as the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation had recently honoured Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

"The Foundation should tender an apology for honouring him," he said and demanded registration of a case against Modi in connection with Gujarat riots.

To a question, Singh said Uttar Pradesh Governor T V Rajeswar did not give permission to prosecute BSP supreme Mayawati in the Taj Corridor case due to Congress pressure.
