CBI sources say a woman was seen talking to Rizwanur an hour before his death

KOLKATA: Not a single day has passed in the past few weeks without a twist in the case of Rizwanur Rehman’s mysterious death. And the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is investigating the case, seems to be caught between the popular perception that Rizwanur was murdered and circumstantial evidences that point to suicide.

Rizwanur, a graphics designer by profession, is the deceased husband of industrialist Ashoke Todi's daughter, Priyanka Todi. Adding a fresh twist to the case, there are reports of a mysterious woman who was seen speaking to Rizwanur near a fish market adjacent to the railway tracks where his body was discovered on the morning of September 21. The lady was reportedly seen speaking to Rizwanur an hour before his body was found.

After the CBI took over the investigation of the case, it had asked the public to pass on any information that it might have on Rizwanur's death. Sources said that the CBI received a telephone call in one of the advertised numbers from a public telephone booth and was told about this mysterious woman.

The names of three women have come in the limelight. The first had been Rizwanur's former girlfriend, Pompy Roy, who courted controversy after giving contradictory statements to the CID, the CBI and the media. To the CID of state police and the media, Pompy said that she last met Rizwanur in 2004.

However, to the CBI she said that Rizwanur called her on her mobile phone from a public telephone booth on September 21 itself, where he expressed a desire to commit suicide. The second woman is Rizwanur's student, Madhvi Chandak. Madhvi used to take private tuitions from Rizwanur in English and computer applications. From Rizwanur's colleagues in Arena Multimedia, CBI officials came to know that he always spoke highly of Madhvi.

In fact the last SMS  that Madhvi  sent to Rizwanur on September 21 was: "You are my guiding star. Don't do this to me." Interrogations revealed that Rizwanur called her up on September 21 to inform her that he would not be giving her tuitions from the next day and so she sent the SMS.

The third woman who has come to limelight is Alpana Jolly, who had recently joined an Arena course. Rizwanur's colleagues said that he used to respect Jolly a lot. She had sent two separate SMSes to Rizwanur on September 21. The first SMS, sent, read: "We need you please" and the second read "Call me please".

Now the CBI has to find answers to two questions. Firstly, whether the information about the mysterious woman talking to Rizwanur near a fish market on the day of his death is true or not. And secondly, if indeed it was true then was she one of the ladies three mentioned above or someone else?
