NEW DELHI: The Congress party’s response to any developing situation is usually ponderous and laboured. But all that will change if the newly-appointed high-powered publication and publicity committee has its way.

The panel is set to launch an extensive publicity campaign aimed at “nailing the BJP and the Sangh Parivar’s lies on the Sethusamudram project”.

The committee has Rahul Gandhi as one of the members and has compiled a well-researched booklet detailing the facts about the project.

The booklet is likely to be released before Diwali and is an attempt to show that the project is “actually a brainchild of the BJP.”

The committee finalised the contents of the booklet at an hour-long meeting on Tuesday morning at the party headquarters. Research for the booklet was done by the party’s department of policy and planning.

There has been a feeling among Congressmen that the party has been slow to counter the propaganda unleashed by the opposition. This booklet is a belated attempt by the party to nail that propaganda.

“The Sangh Parivar is trying to polarise public opinion on the issue by accusing us of being opposed to the deal, while it was the NDA which actually gave permission for the project and made budgetary allocation for it,” said Digvijay Singh, convener of the committee.

The publicity and publications committee is the Congress leadership’s attempt to put in place a mechanism to formulate the party’s response to emerging situations. To counter the opposition’s propaganda the committee has decided to go on a publicity blitzkrieg.

It will soon put out paid ads in both the print and electronic media to highlight facts.  “What we are doing is merely implementing a decision taken by the previous government. They allocated funds for the project, it was a part of the BJP’s manifesto and also of the NDA CMP,” Digvijay added.
