Project will generate 35.4 MW of electricity during peak hours

With the power crisis in the city and the state expected to worsen soon, here’s welcome news for citizens.

Completion of the Rs1,586-crore Middle Vaitarna project by 2011, which promises to supply an additional 455 million litres of water daily to the city, will also bring in 35.4 MW of electricity during peak hours through hydroelectric power generation.

State energy officials have projected that by the end of the year, despite additional power generation of 3,500 MW, the state could face a deficit of 3000-odd MW.

While the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is working on plans and estimates for the project, municipal commissioner Jairaj Phatak’s office submitted a draft for the project at a meeting with BMC leaders on Monday.

The note comes after M/s Mott MacDonald, consultants for the Middle Vaitarna Project, had recommended installation of 11.5 MW turbines for power generation. BMC estimates an expenditure of Rs95 crore for the work.

The report submitted by the consultants has already been referred to the state energy officials. The civic administration informed the leaders that a detailed proposal will be put up before the Standing Committee.

Shiv Sena leader Sunil Prabhu, suggested the power generation project be taken up by the BMC. Pramod Charankar, chief engineer, water supply projects, said, “The power generated will be made available to the western grid, which supplies power to the state. We could supply close to 10 MW on a continuous basis.”

BMC aims to earn Rs1.5 crore monthly out of the power sale.

“This amount could be used as rebate against electricity bills generated at the Pise filtration plant. We are in the process of finalising the tender documents to appoint technical consultants for the project,” Charankar said.
