NEW DELHI: There is a sense of déjà vu in the Left camp after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed himself against early elections and ruled out confrontation with the comrades on the Indo-US nuclear deal.

Though pleased with the development, a senior left leader said there “is an element of suspicion” in the whole thing. CPI general secretary AB Bardhan said “we will wait for the October 22 meeting before commenting.” He, however, said they were indicative of a “sober approach”.

CPI(M) politburo member Sitaram Yechury said the PM’s comments were “in consonance with the understanding of the UPA-Left nuclear committee that government would not operationalise the deal till the panel submits its findings”.

Yechury added, “I can’t make comment on the degree of change of PM’s
determination.”

A circumspect RSP leader Abani Roy said though we welcome the statement, the government has to give it in writing. “We want it in writing, so that there is some document to be referred.”
