KOLKATA: The West Bengal government did a volte face on Friday announcing that police officers allegedly involved in the Rizwanur tragedy will not be removed.

This despite former chief minister Jyoti Basu stating last week that two IPS officers would be removed from their posts for intervening in the legal marriage between Rizwanur and Priyanka, daughter of industrialist Ashoke Todi.

The state government said that any decision on the police officers would be taken only after the judicial commission headed by retired judge Alok Chakraborty submits its final report three months later.

The officers under the scanner are Kolkata police commissioner Prasun Mukherjee, DC (headquarters) Gyanwant Singh, DC (detective department-1) Ajay Kumar, AC (anti-rowdy squad) Sukanti Chakraborty and sub-inspector (ARS) Krishnendu Das.

While Singh, Kumar, Chakraborty and Das have been accused of misusing their powers to try and break the marriage of two adults, Mukherjee has been charged with covering up the acts of junior officers saying whatever they did was part of regular police duty and announcing the death of Rizwanur as suicide even before the arrival of the post-mortem report.

Former chief minister Jyoti Basu, who had been most vocal so far about action against the police officers, said here on Friday that chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had intimated him about the changed decision of not taking action against any officer for the time being.

“I asked Bhattacharjee what action was being taken against the erring officers and he told me the state’s advocate general had advised him not to take any action against any police officer before the judicial commission submits its final report. The chief minister also told me that he is waiting for the Calcutta High Court order on a petition demanding a CBI probe into the Rizwanur case,” Basu told reporters on the sidelines of CPM state secretariat meeting here.
