Bihar chief minister comes under attack for not doing enough to save Anand Mohan from the gallows

PATNA: The capital punishment for former member of Parliament Anand Mohan and two other ex-MLAs and lifeterm imprisonment to JD(U) MLA Munna Shukla and three others, including ex-MP Lovely Anand in the killing of IAS officer G Krishnaiyyah, has snowballed into a political issue in Bihar.

Leaders from almost all parties joining hands against the Nitish Kumar government on the issue along with JD(U) dissidents.
NDA convener George Fernandes, who has been patronising the dissidents ever since he was ousted from the presidentship of the JD(U) and replaced by Sharad Yadav, also found it as a big opportunity to take on Nitish Kumar. Fernandes wanted to make a strong platform for himself in Muzaffarpur constituency.
Muzaffarpur, the constituency represented by Fernandes in the Lok Sabha many times, has a sizable chunk of upper caste Bhumihars and Rajputs. Anand Mohan belongs to Rajput, and Munna Shukla is a Bhumihar. Fernandes, who has been abstaining from all important meetings of the party on health grounds for the last two years, wasted no time to airdash to Patna and meet Anand Mohan in the central jail. He was accompanied by six MLAs from the ruling coalition, including known Nitish baiters and some leaders from the opposition parties. Fernandes could not hide his feelings for the government while saying, “This government should have gone away quite some time ago”.
The opposition parties are also sympathising with them in order to garner upper caste votes which was solidly behind Nitish Kumar. Now that prominent caste leaders like Prabhunath Singh, MP, a Rajput leader of north Bihar, and Nagmani, a Kushwaha leader of central Bihar, had also come out in open to support the dissidents in the party on this issue.
They have been exerting pressure on chief minister to replace home secretary Afzal Amanullah whom they hold responsible for conducting the speedy trial of the Krishnaiyyah murder case. Amanullah had also said recently that the government is planning to set up more special courts for speedy trial of such cases very soon. This had created a flutter among politicians with criminal nexus.
Defending the role of his government on the issue, Nitish Kumar said it was the duty of his government to conduct trial of criminal cases expeditiously.
