BANGALORE:  In a sudden and dramatic turn of events on Monday, the Janata Dal (Secular) chief minister HD Kumaraswamy, who resigned following the withdrawal of the support by the BJP, extended his support to the BJP to resurrect the coalition.

But the last word on the state political crisis was yet to be  said till late on Monday night since it depended on the governor Rameshwar Thakur whether he would allow the two parties to turn friends again or dissolve the assembly and recommend the imposition of president's rule.

H D Kumaraswamy stepped down as the JD(S) chief minister on Monday after finding that the Congress was in no mood to extend support to his party to ensure his continuation in power.

"We had two options in front of us, either to seek vote of confidence or resign. We decided to go for the second one. I, and other 16 ministers from the party, resigned this evening," said Kumaraswamy.

"I took the decision because I did not want to force mid-term polls on the people of Karnataka. At times we have to take some decisions against the conscience. Today I do not blame or accuse anybody for what happened in the last one week," said an emotional Kumaraswamy.

After the BJP withdrew its support to the JD (S)-led government on Sunday, Kumaraswamy had pinned his hopes on the Congress, the second largest party with 65 seats in the assembly. With Congress's support, Kumaraswamy could have mustered the required 113 seats in the assembly to remain as the chief minister.

However, dashing JD (S) hopes, 65 Congress legislators submitted letters to governor Rameshwar Thakur stating that they would not support any government other than the one formed by their own.  The Congress requested the governor to dismiss the government since he had lost majority support in the House.

Kumaraswamy met the governor on Monday afternoon to allow him to seek vote of confidence.  Thakur asked him if he could prove the majority in the wake of what was happening.
