BANGALORE: The 20-month-old JDS-BJP coalition government in Karnataka, headed by Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, reduced to a minority on Sunday following the BJP's withdrawal of support after JDS refused to transfer power to it.

Capping three weeks of heightened political activity, the BJP on Sunday called on Governor Rameshwar Thakur and handed over the letter withdrawing support to the government.

The BJP led by its former Deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa asked the Governor to dismiss the Kumaraswamy government as his continuance amounted to an "unconstitutional act."

"Kumaraswamy should be directed to take the floor test within three days as any loss of time is sure to result in unethical political activity," the BJP delegation told the Governor, rejecting the Chief Minister's plan to seek a trust vote on October 18.

The BJP leaders and party activists marched in a procession from Mahatma Gandhi statue to Raj Bhavan and submitted the letter of withdrawal of support.

The BJP urged the Governor that it wanted immediate elections in the state, a stand shared by its former coalition partner DDS, which also resolved to face polls at its Legislature party meeting.

Minutes after the BJP pulled out of the Kumaraswamy government, a delegation of Congress leaders led by former minister D K Shivakumar called on the Governor.

Kumaraswamy is also expected to meet the Governor and request him for time to prove majority in the house.

"I will meet the Governor and request him to allow me seek floor test as per constitutional requirement," he said.
