Only 12.7 pc females have cash incomes in India: Survey

NEW DELHI: Even as more number of Indian women are going up the corporate ladder with heavy pay packets, only 12.7 per cent of females of the country's active workforce are having cash incomes, a latest study says.
   
Further, nearly 68 per cent of women graduates in India are not having any form of income against their name, reveals a recent study on the income and savings pattern of Indians.

"Of the active workforce with cash incomes, only 12.7 per cent are females," notes the report titled 'Invest India Incomes and Savings Survey 2007' by IIMS Dataworks.
   
It collected data from nearly one million households on occupation, income sources, income and asset ownership and household composition, among others.
   
"We have taken cash income into account for making the calculations. For instance, there are many people whose net worth is very high considering their assets and number of shares owned, among others. But here we have only considered income earned in cash," Executive Director of IIMS Dataworks Sandeep Ghosh told.
   
According to the survey, most of the women are waged labourers. While 35.4 per cent of them are into agricultural wage labour, the highest for any sector, about 17 per cent are into waged labour. Only about 5.2 per cent are private salaried workers, the study reported.
   
Among the active women workforce in the country, 55.73 per cent earn between Rs 25,000 to Rs one lakh every year whereas those earning above one lakh per annum is estimated to be nearly 28 per cent. About 16.28 per cent of women have an annual earnings of less than Rs 25,000.
   
Another conclusion is that about 81 per cent or 260 million individual earners get less than Rs 90,000 per year.

The national average incomes of different occupations including agriculture wage labourer is estimated to be Rs 71,826 per annum.
   
Moreover, the country's paid workforce between the age of 18 and 59 years is about 321.4 million with 227 million of them in rural areas.

The data collection was done from December 2006 to June 2007.
