CHENNAI: Coming down heavily on Tamil Nadu ChiefMinister M Karunanidhi for his explanation that the Supreme Court's order, banning the October 1 bandh in Tamil Nadu could not be conveyed to the people as the order arrived late, AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa said such an explanation stemmed out of 'fear' that his government would be dismissed.

In a statement here, she said the DMK patriarch had 'failed in his duty as a Chief Minister"

"Soon after the order was passed at 1.30 in the afternoon, Karunanidhi announced that the DPA will stage a fast, but did not announce that the government and private organisations, educational institutions and hospitals will function and transport services will also be on," she said.

The announcement should at least have been made through the Chief Secretary, asking all to report for work on that day, since there was no bandh. Failure of such an announcement had led to contempt of court, she said.

"Though Karunanidhi said he and his cabinet colleagues attended office on October 1 and claimed schools functioned and all transport services were on throughout the state, it was widely reported in the media that the entire state had come to a standstill," she said.

She said Karunanidhi's remarks could have held good in the Stone Age, but could not be accepted now when there were advances in telecommuncation.

She alleged that even as the hearing on the matter was on in the Apex Court, the advocates were constantly updating the Chief Minister of the developments. "Besides, intelligence officials were keeping track of things."

With the Apex Court's stay, small traders and others opened shop on Monday, but were forced to down their shutters by DMK men, she alleged.

"Even transport workers affiliated to AIADMK unions were not allowed to operate buses though they were willing to," she said.

"The Chief Minister's announcement of the fast was even broadcast by Kalaignar TV," she said, adding that Karunanidhi's actions were akin to 'hiding a big pumpkin in a heap of rice'.
