NEW DELHI: What is more dangerous for the CPI(M) - communalism or imperialism? Stung by reports that for the CPI(M) George Bush’s imperialism is more dangerous than BJP’s communalism, the party, on Thursday, made an attempt to clear its stand. It sought to allay the impression that it is facilitating BJP’s return by toppling the UPA government over the nuke deal.
But the comrades appear to have ended up creating more confusion on the issue than before. CPI(M) mouthpiece “People’s Democracy” (PD), in its forthcoming issue, has taken pains to explain that the party has not abandoned its struggle against communalism. “Once Comrade Stalin was asked as to which deviation - Left adventurism or Right revisionism - is more dangerous to the revolutionary movement. His reply was indeed a classic. He said that deviation is more dangerous against which one does not put up an effective fight,” said PD editor and politburo member Sitaram Yechury.
“This is precisely the point concerning communalism and imperialism. Both are dangerous, both need to be fought and at no cost can the struggle against one be given up, leave alone be weakened in the name of struggling against the other,” he said. “The Indian people simply do not have a choice. Both communalism and imperialism need to be fought against,” Yechury said, adding “those who pit one against the other are doing disservice to both the country and our people.”
He further added: “Having failed to rouse umbrage against us on such charges, our critics have now changed both their gear and lane in their drive to spread calumny against us.”
Claiming that the party has an unblemished record of protecting the unity and integrity of India’s social fabric with its relentless struggle against communalism, the CPI(M) leader said it also has unparalleled record in protecting and safeguarding our country’s sovereignty from being eroded by imperialist incursions.
