Sends letter to heritage panel, which will assess the redevelopment proposal today

Milind Deora has got a job on his hands. As the heritage panel meets to discuss the controversial private redevelopment of Crawford Market on Thursday, the Congress MP from south Mumbai would go all out to influence the committee’s decision.

Deora, who had vociferously opposed the market redevelopment at the hands of M/s East and West Developers, said it was a non-transparent and hasty deal favouring the developer. He has drafted a letter to the committee chairman, Sharad Upasani, urging him to carefully monitor the proposal before sending in recommendations.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) sent the proposal, approved by the corporation on September 11, to the committee last week. Permission from the committee is required as the redevelopment proposal envisages vertical development with a floor space index of 4 near the Crawford Market precinct, a Grade I heritage structure. Deora stated in his letter, “I feel the committee is morally bound to monitor the redevelopment proposal carefully. There is a strong indication that BMC will be making a huge loss in this entire deal. Further, the apprehension of noted historians and conservationists about the nearby located Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) losing its Unesco heritage tag due to the proposed redevelopment of the market need to be accounted for by the committee.”

It is unlikely though that the committee would pass its final recommendations at Thursday’s meeting. “It is on the agenda for discussion but we are yet to deliberate on the plans submitted by the developer,” a committee member said.
