UNITED NATIONS: A photo exhibition which takes viewers through the various phases of Mahatma Gandhi's life and emphasizes his message of peace, non-violence and brotherhood opened at the world body headquarters here.
 
Congress President Sonia Gandhi inaugurated the exhibition last night at the United Nations headquarters' lobby which hundreds of people visit each day.
  
Gandhi went round the exhibition entitled "Gandhi and Global Non-violent Awakening".
 
Speaking on the occasion, President of Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Karan Singh explained the purpose of the exhibition organized as a part of the International Day of Non-Violence observed by the United Nations on Tuesday.
  
Each photo carries at the bottom message of the Mahatma on his philosophy of non-violence as also views of leaders who were influenced by his philosophy including South African leader Nelson Mandela.
 
Later, a movie "Mahatma, the Great Soul" was screened in the Dag Hammarskjold auditorium in the United Nations.
 
The United Nations postal service is issuing a special postal cancellation to honour Gandhi.
