BANGALORE: The coalition government in Karnataka, led by Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy is tottering in the wake of reluctance by the JD(S) to transfer power to the BJP on October 3.

It is undertstood that JD(S) supremo H D Devegowda has told senior BJP leader Yashwant Singh during their one-on-one meeting on Sunday that his party was not inclined to hand over the chief-ministership to BJP on October 3 and needs more time to discuss the contentious issue.

Buyoed by the success of the JD(S) in the just concluded Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) election, Gowda has been insisting that the BJP accept the continuance of the present coalition arrangment, indicating that no change of guard was acceptable to the JDS.

Sources close to Gowda said that during the brief meeting with Sinha, the former Prime Minister referred to the JD(S) 'feat' in checking the Congress, for which Kumaraswamy has toiled hard in the last twenty months.

In the event of the BJP not accepting the conditions put forth by JD(S), Gowda's outfit was in favour of facing mid-term elections to the state assembly, sources indicated.

Gowda is not satisifed by the BJP getting the resignation of tourism minister Sriramulu, who had to quit after the JD(S) demanded that he do so for filing a criminal case against Kumaraswamy.

The former prime minister has been demanding that stringent action be taken against suspended BJP MLC, G Janardhana Reddy, who has repeatedly been levelling bribery charges against the Gowda family and BJP MP, G Karunakar Reddy, who was supporting his brother.

At the JD(S) Legislature Party meeting scheduled for this evening, the party legislators will unanimously demand that Kumaraswamy not quit and continue, sources said.

Another source in JD(S) claimed that Gowda was toying with the idea of postponing today's Legislature party meeting to October three.

An embattled BJP, however, has rejected the fresh conditions laid down by Gowda and is contemplating en masse resignation by its ministers on October three, sources in the BJP said.

Deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa will be holding a session with ministers of his party later in the day to discuss the prevailing political situation and decide on future plans.

BJP spokesman S Suresh Kumar told here that Sinha is camping in the city and would be present during the meeting.
