A spritely small-town boy from Bihar took corruption by the horns in this mega city. Mithilesh Sharma, 19, an aspiring carpenter, had filed a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Bureau against two officials of a polytechnic college after they allegedly sought bribes to allow him admission. His guts payed, and the accused were arrested. “I decided to speak up against corruption. I am willing to bear the consequences of my actions,” said Sharma.

Sharma had sought admission to carpentry course at the Kherwadi Government Polytechnic College. He told ACB that the two college officials had promised to admit him in return of Rs6,000. The complaint led to the arrest of Ganesh Ambokar, a carpentry teacher, and Uttam Rathod, an officer bearer, on September 20.

“Ambokar and Rathod told me that I wouldn’t get admission as the college preferred candidates from Maharashtra,” said Sharma. “They told me that if I was ready to shell out Rs6,000 they would help me get in. I initially agreed to pay the bribe, but I didn’t have that much money.

When I was at my wit’s end, a friend’s brother advised me to file a complaint with ACB.” With Ambokar behind bars, the college has lost its lone carpentry teacher.

Sharma said that he was determined to fight till finish. “I had heard tales of corruption and red-tapism in this city. So, when someone demanded a bribe from me, I was not ready to give in meekly,” said the boy who first came to Mumbai three years ago.

Sharma works part-time at a pizza joint and stays in Santacruz with his relatives. “I know that after my complaint, I, perhaps, would be harassed by college authorities.

But I wanted to ensure that no one else faces similar harassment,” he said. “Three years in Mumbai have taught me to be strong.”
