LUCKNOW: Mayawati seems hell-bent upon carrying out her promise of putting Samajwadi Party (SP) general secretary Amar Singh behind bars.

The BSP supremo had repeated the “Amar Singh ko jail bhejenge” promise in each and every party rally during her election campaign earlier this year.

Now, after an inquiry committee submitted its report on the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) plots scam, the Mayawati government is all set to lodge criminal cases against Amar Singh and 27 other allottees who allegedly gained undue benefits from land allotments in a prized residential colony of the state capital.

FIRs will also be lodged against former chief secretary Naveen Chandra Bajpeyi and other officials responsible for the scam in allotment of plots during the Mulayam regime in 2005.

SP president Mulayam Singh Yadav on Thursday defended his lieutenant and launched a scathing attack against the Mayawati regime for allegedly targeting SP leaders for “political vendetta”.

“Mayawati had been saying in her election speeches that she would send me and Amar Singh to jail. But I must warn the chief minister that she is not going to be in power for a lifetime. People should beware of what we can do when we come into power,” he said.

The decision to file FIRs was taken after Lucknow division commissioner Vijay Shankar Pande presented an 85-page inquiry report to the government on Wednesday. The report concludes that the indiscreet allotments resulted in a revenue loss of about Rs2.88 crore to the government.

The inquiry report has concluded that the plots were given out at a rate much lower than the market rate. A petition in this regard is already pending in the Supreme Court which has restrained the allottees from transferring the plots.
