KOLKATA: The family of Rizwan-ur-Rehman, who died under mysterious circumstances following marriage to a Hindu girl, on Thursday moved Calcutta High Court seeking a CBI enquiry into his death claiming they had no faith in the state machinery.

Keshwar Jahan, his mother, and brother Ruqbanur moved a writ petition before Justice Soumitra Pal seeking a CBI probe into the death of the 29-year-old on September 21, amid allegations of involvement of two senior police officials.

Pal directed Jahan's lawyer Kalyan Banerjee to serve notice to all parties including Kolkata Police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee, Deputy Commissioner (Headquarter) Gyanwant Singh and Deputy Commissioner (Detective Department) Ajoy Kumar, apart from the girl's industrialist father Ashok Todi, owner of a leading hosiery brand.

The matter is likely to come up for hearing soon. A CID enquiry into the death is already on.

But the petitioners claimed that since police officers of the state were in league with Todi and had acted beyond the statutory provisions of law, they felt that fair inquiry will not be conducted by any agency of the state police.

As such they were seeking investigation by an independent agency like CBI as they had a clear impression that Rizwan-ur was murdered as against police commissioner's claim that he had committed suicide, even before getting post mortem report into the death, the petitioners claimed.

It was alleged that Singh and Kumar had illegally summoned Rizwan-ur to the police headquarter and pressurized him to part with his Hindu wife.
