MUMBAI: Lalchand Rajput has been retained manager of the Indian team. The appointment of the former India opener, who guided a young Indian side to Twenty20 World championship, is however only for the seven-match ODI series against Australia which starts in Bangalore on Saturday. The Board has indicated that a new coach will be appointed before the start of the series against Pakistan in November.

“We wanted to continue with the present interim arrangement,” said Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Niranjan Shah.

“I can say it is a reward for the good work he has done. We’re happy to retain him,” Shah added.

He, however, refused to comment if the Board is mulling to appoint him full time as he is also one of the applicants for the post.

“The special coach committee meet will be held in Bangalore on Saturday. We’ll finalise everything there,” Shah said.

It has been learnt that a final call on whether to go for a foreign or an India coach will also be taken at the meeting. The recent success of the Indian team, despite the absence of a permanent manager, has enthused the desi brigade in the BCCI set-up.

The Board officials apparently are not very excited with the response to their advertisement for the new coach. About 10 applications were received. “It is up to the committee whether it would consider the applications or not,” Shah said. Rajput (45), who played two Tests and four ODIs in 1985, was also successful with the India ‘A’ team.

The Mumbaikar’s second assignment is a continuation of the Board’s prolonged interim arrangement following Greg Chappell’s resignation after India’s unsuccessful campaign in the World Cup this year.

After Chappell, Ravi Shastri was made the manager for the Bangladesh tour in April followed by the appointment of Chandu Borde as the manager for the England tour.
