Podar World School students went on a three-week trip to US

For nine Podar World School students, America is not just a country of jet-setters anymore. Living in a small town called Culpepper in Virginia with a host family cleared all their misconceptions about the country.

In their first ever foreign exchange programme, Podar World School students went on a three week trip to the United States. Organised by Taj Global Understanding, a non profit organisation, the pilot program involved students living with American host family and experiencing the culture firsthand.

“Indian food is healthier than American. But they are more patriotic and preserve their history,” said 10-year old Dhriti Oza. The nine students shared their experience with US consul general Michael Owen at the consulate on Wednesday.

Around 80,000 Indians enroll for studies in the US, but only 2000 Americans come to India for further studies. However, according to the US consul general Michael Owen, the figures are on a steady rise. “Such exchange programmes generate interests abroad and bring more visitors to the home country. India will soon be on par with European countries on such programmes as the country has a very interesting culture,” he said.

“We want our students to be global citizens. There are several more plans to participate in other exchange programmes with European countries. These students missed their lessons while they were in the US but they have learnt more through this experiment than sitting in any classroom,” said Dr Vandana Lulla, principal of the school.
