State government has decide to introduce pension scheme for soldiers killed in wars between 1947 and 1995. The decision, approved by Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, is the first step taken by the state to help the families of the martyrs died before 1995. In 1995, the state had introduced financial help for the soldiers killed thereafter.

The scheme will cover 700 families with a monthly pension of Rs1,000 to the widows of the martyrs. “The families of the soldiers killed before 1995 were uncovered. This scheme is in addition to the help from the central government scheme,” an official from the general administrative department said.

Sainik Welfare Department Director Col Bhagatsingh Deshmukh said: “Our survey, conducted in association with Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini, has revealed that there are 700 martyrs in the state fallen after 1947 till 1995 are uncovered. After the central government had financially helped these families with Rs1 lakh recently, we thought to introduce state initiative and submitted the proposal,” he added.

Deshmukh said that the survey has covered almost 99 per cent of the information about the soldiers killed during that period.

The state had also introduced a scheme of financial help of Rs2 lakh to the martyrs killed in battle casualties in 1995 which was later revised in 1999, after the Kargil war, with the amount of Rs5 lakh to the kin of martyrs and Rs1 lakh to 3 lakh for those injured.

“Families of 115 martyrs till 1999 and 278 martyrs between 1999 and 2007 were paid Rs2 lakh and Rs5 lakh, respectively. 154 disabled were given Rs1 lakh and Rs3 lakh,” Deshmukh said.
