NEW DELHI: There is good news for women particularly those who are working. Taking cognisance of harassment, molestation and other inconveniences caused to women during local train journey, the railways have proposed to run all-women special trains from Delhi on certain routes.

The three routes identified for running the Ladies Special Trains are Panipat, Palwal and Aligarh to Delhi and back.

"We have submitted the proposal to the Railway Board for running exclusive trains for women office goers in certain routes," Sri Prakash, Northern Railway General Manager said.

"The logistic support for the ladies specials are being worked out and we are expecting to run the trains soon," he said.

About 25,000 women commute to Delhi from the neighbouring areas on working days. "Though women are coming from all routes connecting Delhi including Meerut, Modinagar, Moradabad, Hapur, Rewari, Rohtas, and Shamli the routes identified for running ladies special trains are witnessing heavy rush from women commuters.

"So we will run the ladies special trains in these routes first and later on the service may extend to other routes as well," said Prakash.

All the three destinations identified for running ladies specials are within 150km from Delhi and the train journey is covered in 90 minutes to two hours.

"The trains will have eight to 12 coaches depending upon the demand," Prakash said and added "we are trying to depute women ticket examiners and lady RPF personnel in these ladies special trains."

Ladies special trains are running successfully in Mumbai. The number of women commuters in the local trains have gone up in the recent past.

There are about 75 local trains running in the Delhi region ferrying about 2 lakh daily commuters. However, the running of ladies special trains would not affect the schedule of other local trains.

"The schedule of ladies special trains are to be announced shortly as we are discussing the issue with the railway passenger associations," said Prakash.

Meanwhile, the Northern Railway has added exclusive coaches for ladies in the existing sub-urban trains. Two coaches with distinct colour code - brown and yellow - have been added to local trains to accommodate women commuters.

Lady RPF personnel are also deployed to prevent male passengers entering the ladies compartments. "Many persons have been prosecuted in the past for illegal entry into the ladies compartments," said Prakash adding the ladies squads have been strengthened to carry out frequent surprise checks in ladies compartments.
