Vasai college wins IPTA drama contest

St Gonsalo Garcia College, Vasai , won the 36th inter-collegiate drama competition jointly sponsored by the Indian People’s Theatre Association and Mysore Association. The college won the Prithviraj Kapoor Rotating Trophy and cash prize of Rs5001for its play ‘Cock-Eyed’.

Manmohan Krishan Trophy for the second best production went to “Ek Aur Mayyat’ staged by Ramnarain Ruia College, said Shaila Sathyu, general secretary, IPTA.

Actor Akash Dabhade received the Balraj Sahni Award for outstanding performance while Nilesh Gopnarayan was declared best actor, Sathyu added.

The contest provided a platform for college students to showcase their talent and is considered among the most prestigious in Hindi, Hindustani or Urdu theatre.

Prominent IPTA members including AK Hangal, Shaukat Kaifi, Mrs Manmohan Krishna, MS Sathyu, Kuldip Singh, Sulabha Arya, Aanjjan Srivastav, Ramesh Talwar, Raman Kumar and Avtar Gill have been involved with the movement. Of the total 30 entries, 28 colleges staged their plays. 700 students participated in the IPTA competition.

“For 35 years, we have been encouraging young talent and also creating theatre awareness among college students,” Sathyu said.
