She offers “unlimited fun” and provides a mobile number. When Bangalore’s additional commissioner of police KN Jeetendranath, posing as a customer, dialled the number recently, a pimp directed him to a service apartment where a call girl awaited him. She was immediately taken into custody.
The world’s oldest profession turned to the internet years ago, but India’s tech capital now seems to be the leader in what the police refer to as e-brothels.
The Bangalore police are busting at least five internet-sex rackets a month. “The demand for e-brothels has been on the rise,” Jeetendranath said, “because there are girls wanting to make extra bucks and there are cash-rich techies looking for fun.”
The call girls are so easily available at a click of the mouse that the brothel houses are rare to find in Bangalore, which never had a designated red light area. “Sex workers at the bus stand or a railway station have all but lost their business to their e-rivals,” Jeetendranath said.
There are few cases of police raiding a brothel in Bangalore. The number of e-brothel stings, on the other hand, has risen from 10 to 15 a year before 2005 to some 60 a year now. This, officers said, is higher than in any other Indian city.
A pimp who runs a website said: “People in Bangalore earn lakhs of rupees and it’s not difficult for them to spill a few thousands on a beautiful dame. Most of my clients are from the IT industry. They are worried about privacy and contracting sexual diseases.”
One website claims to be an “an exclusive escort agency bringing elite escort girls who offer a true GFE.” For the uninitiated, GFE is “girlfriend experience.” Another site proclaims to be “a definitive guide for anyone looking for amazing and playful escort girls for adult fun in Bangalore.”
A typical escort-service website displays pictures of well-proportioned women; and links lead to tariff details. The rates start from some Rs5,000 for an hour and go up to Rs50,000 for a night.
“Please contact Pamela to discuss your needs,” says one site. The pitch includes a helpful addendum: “We accept foreign currency, and debit and credit cards.”
