MUMBAI: The Twenty20 world champion Indian cricket team will be accorded a public reception at the Wankhede Stadium here soon after arriving from South Africa on Wednesday morning.
The Indian cricket board announced here on Tuesday that the team, after landing at Sahar International Airport at 8 a.m., will be brought in an open-air bus from the airport to Wankhede Stadium where the felicitation would be organised.
The felicitation function, which is expected to start around 10.30 a.m., is being organised jointly the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Maharashtra state government.
India defeated Pakistan by five runs in a thrilling final at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg Monday night to win the maiden edition of the game's shortest version.
"After the airport reception, the Indian team will proceed in an open-air bus from Sahar in north-west Mumbai to Wankhede Stadium in south Mumbai, under the supervision of the Mumbai traffic police," said the BCCI.
"The motorcade will proceed along the Western Express Highway through Mahim, Shivaji Park, Prabhadevi, Mahalaxmi, Peddar Road and onto Marine Drive before terminating at the Wankhede Stadium."
At Wankhede Stadium, the players will be felicitated by the BCCI at a ceremony open to the fans.
Free public entry will be allowed through the stadium gates opposite the Aaykar Bhavan (Income Tax Office) on Maharishi Karve Marg and the entrance on Marine Drive through the Netaji Subhash Road.
"The BCCI has extended a warm invitation to the cricket loving citizens of the metropolis of Mumbai to come out in large numbers and congratulate the victorious Indian team on its remarkable achievement," said the BCCI.
