An engineer working with the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) was arrested on Friday night after confessing to murdering his wife.

Satish Devkar (35) was arrested at his residence at the TMC employees’ quarters in Majiwada where he stayed with his wife Kunda (26). Devkar is working as an executive engineer with the Majiwada ward office.

On Friday night, Satish’s neighbours alerted the Kapurbavdi police after they allegedly heard Kunda screaming for help. On reaching Devkar’s residence at approximately 1.30am, the police found Kunda lying in a pool of blood and Devkar sitting beside her. Devkar is said to have then confessed to the murder and given himself up to the police.

Kunda, who was a science graduate, worked as a laboratory assistant in Mumbai. Her marriage with Devkar was arranged and took place on May 4 this year.

In his statement to the police, Devkar stated that Kunda had an extra-marital affair, and despite his warning her on several occasions she did not mend her ways because of which he got fed up and killed her. Devkar claimed to have caught Kunda with “a person” at a lodge a week after they were married. He stated that although he tried to get her to stop “her habits” she continued.

On Wednesday, Devkar stated that he once again found Kunda with “a person”, this time at his residence, and that a quarrel ensued. He said that on Friday night, a conversation on the same issue led to a heated argument, and Kunda’s refusal to heed his warnings enraged him. He then claimed to have assaulted Kunda with a stick, stabbed her with a chopper and hit her on the head with a brass pestle. According to the police, Kunda died instantly.

Speaking to the media, Devkar’s neighbours said that he was a “very good human being and regularly went to temples, attended bhajans., kept fasts and followed all rituals of the warkari community”.

“Satish was at home when our officers got there after receiving a call regarding some domestic problem at the residence. There, we found Kunda lying in a pool of blood, dead. Satish was present in the same room and he immediately surrendered and confessed to the crime,” said assistant commissioner of police Bhimrao Sonawane.
