KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala may not contest the crucial November Constituent Assembly elections that will form a body to frame a constitution and decided the fate of the 238-year old monarchy, a senior member of the Nepali Congress has said.

Dr Shekhar Koirala, Nepali Congress central committee member, said Prime Minister Koirala is unlikely to contest the Constituent assembly elections on November 22.

Though the Morang and Sunsari chapters of Nepali Congress have urged the Prime Minister to be their candidate, there are chances that he will not file his candidacy, Dr Shekhar said at an election programme.

Supporting the idea, Dr Shekhar said, "As the party should be led by youths, Prime Minister Koirala should not file his nomination papers," for the polls.

Stating that the legitimacy of the government will be under threat if the polls were not held on time, he was quoted as saying by The Himalayan Times online that the "Maoists should be included in the polls at any rate." He said the Maoists will return to the government within a few days.

Meanwhile, Maoist leader Dev Gurung told mediapersons here that they will take their decision on rejoining the government after the 'mahasamati' meeting of the Nepali Congress.

"We will wait till Nepali Congress 'mahasamti' meeting and Prime Minister Koirala has assured us of announcing a republic from the parliament," he said, adding, "If the republic was not announced, we will go ahead with the agitation."

A comprehensive peace agreement was signed last November between Nepal's multi-party government and the Maoists. The former rebels walked out of the government earlier this week after the prime minister rejected their demand for declaring Nepal a republic immediately.
