AHMEDABAD: Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams considers her transition from a student to being the most experienced member on board the International Space Station (ISS) as one of the memorable moments of her record six-month stay in space.
"At one point I was the most experienced on board the ISS in the company of two Russain cosmonauts. I felt that there was a lot of responsibility here and knew what my job was. I think that this transition of mine from a student to the senior most person on board was the most interesting moment," Williams told students of Rajasthan English Higher Secondary School here Saturday.
She showed the audience an audio-video presentation of her trip to space while explaining the daily routine under zero gravity conditions in the ISS (Discovery), space walks and related information, role of American and Russain astronauts, experiments and exercise routines of the astronauts.
The astronaut, who set new space records for staying on board the ISS and space walks (by a woman), also answered several questions posed by students like whether the astronauts grew any plants on board the ISS.
"We are doing some experiments and are growing small plants in packets. Water and sunlight are provided inside the chamber. However, we noticed that the plants the Russians had grown on their side of the ISS were faced towards the sun," Williams, whose father is a Gujarati and mother of Slovakian origin, said.
She told the students that any of them could achieve what she did, provided they were focused and believed in their abilities.
