State government is looking forward to develop 11 airports, erstwhile defunct airstrips, into regional airports operational for services of scheduled airlines under public-private partnership.

Of the total 11 airports, five will be developed by the Mumbai Airport Development Corporation and six by the Mumbai Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC). The MIDC has already sought proposals from public listed companies with an annual turnover of at least Rs50 crore.

These airports will come up in Tier II and Tier III cities like those of Nanded, Kolhapur, Osmanabad, Amravati and Latur among others.

According to Sanjay Ubale, secretary special projects, the idea is to develop these airstrips into feasible airports with decent terminal buildings. Private airlines too will be encouraged to use these airports. These airports will also give a fillip to the regional airlines and the much needed air connectivity for the economic development of the state.

The process of filling applications after receiving proposals and preparing common bids will be completed in about six months Ubale said.

Meanwhile, the GVK group which is currently involved with upgradation of Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport as the lead partner in a consortium has also responded and applied for the development of such airports according to a source in general administration department.

The group will develop viable airports across the country and has formed a joint venture with Deccan Aviation, Raheja builders and IDFC for the same. The venture is at a notional stage and has to be approved by all respective company boards.

A Mumbai International Airport Ltd spokesperson confirmed that GVK would be looking at developing low-cost airports. The basic idea for these airports is to have stand-alone airports with infrastructure like IT parks, developed well- constructed colonies and hotels and create viable commercial environment that would lead to increased tourist inflow and support the economy of the region along with generating employment.
