KOLKATA: The CPI(M) may be taking to the streets against US imperialism, but in its own backyard in West Bengal, it is not averse to it’s police force seeking ‘knowledge’ from  its US counterparts.

Top police officials of both Kolkata Police and West Bengal Police are currently  scouting for assistance from organisations like New York Police Department (NYPD), Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to equip their own department officials in investigating crimes.

Highly-placed state police sources told DNA, the knowledge-sharing pacts are aimed at training investigating officers in West Bengal of the modern methods required for investigating homicide cases and also giving them tips on how to make counter-arguments in the court.

“We are keen on updating our officers on how the US police departments make use of DNA analysis in probing homicide cases," a senior state police official said.

The knowledge-sharing will be in three phases. In the first phase, the Central Detective Training School in Kolkata will bring documentaries featuring homicide case probes by FBI to India. The initial training will be through these films.

In the second phase, senior officers of the West Bengal and Kolkata Police would visit the FBI, NYPD and LAPD headquarters in the US to acquire a first-hand knowledge and apprise their juniors of their experiences on their return.

In the third stage, senior detectives, forensic and DNA analysis experts would be invited to train the investigation officers.
