The Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC) on Thursday unveiled a state-of-the-art security surveillance system.

Procured at a cost of Rs28 crore, the system will help in keeping an eye over all the western offshore oil and gas installations. “The main radar has a range of 20 nautical miles,” said RS Sharma, chairman and managing director, ONGC.

A decision to install such a sophisticated system was taken on the recommendation of Naval Headquarters and Offshore Defence Advisory Group, Sharma said.

The group, Navy and Coast Guard are partnering ONGC in providing security for the offshore installations of ONGC and joint venture companies. The system will help them in round-the-clock monitoring of the waters of the Arabian Sea with real time data.

ONGC presently has 12 process complexes and more than 130 well head platforms located in the western offshore. In addition to these, there are assets under JV operations. More than 7,000 persons are deployed to man these operations in the western offshore.

“The sophisticated surveillance system will be able to assist in search and rescue operations and also track any drifting or intruding vessel so that a timely interception can be made.

Moreover, this technology is effective in all weather conditions,” Sharma said at the inauguration function held at the ONGC’s headquarters at Dharavi.

“It can also facilitate in establishing voice communication with any vessel in its range, from the control room at the platform. The system has the capability for collection and distribution of meteorological data in the surveillance zone,” said Sharma.
