Nine people have been arrested for the August 31 robbery at businessman Gaurishankar Gupta’s bungalow at Model Town in Mulund. The arrested, including four people who were employed as servants by the businessman, had stolen ornaments and cash amounting to Rs23.5 lakh before fleeing in Gupta’s Innova car.

“When they realised that they will be caught at a check post, they abandon the stolen vehicle at Tata Colony on the Eastern Express Highway. The car was recovered on September 1,” said a police official.

After tracking down the address of the four servants, a team from the Mulund police station was sent to Bihar and Delhi where they arrested the nine accused and recovered the stolen booty.

The arrested were brought to Mumbai on Tuesday evening. According to police, the four servants had been working at Gupta’s home for the past year and a half.

“There was a monetary dispute between the servants and Gupta because of which the servants struck upon the plan to rob him,” said the official.

On August 31, the four servants, along with five others, barged into Gupta’s home and tied up his mother and wife before ransacking the bungalow.

Dattatray Karale, deputy commissioner of police (zone VII) confirmed the arrests and said that the entire case will be disclosed once the arrested are interrogated.

Police said that the arrested also stole four expensive mobile phones and disconnected the bungalow’s landline connection.
