This Ganesh festival, you can prevent water pollution. Just hand over the flowers to volunteers of Nature Calling, who have an action plan ready to derive different colours from these flowers and use them for making environment-friendly paints.

Inspired by Lakhichand Jain, a senior faculty member of BD Somani Institute of Fashion Technology , his colleagues Jayesh Sarmalkar, Mahendra Yadav along with Kailas Chaudhari (artiste with an advertisement agency), Dasu Vaidya (noted Marathi lyricist), Anil Jain, Vijayraj Bodhankar (a pharmacist and painter) founded ‘Nature Calling’ four years ago. Since then, hundreds of students from various schools in the city have joined the initiative to protect the environment.

An artist at heart, Lakhichand Jain, who is known for his expertise in Rajasthani folk art Mandana, said, “Every year after Ganesh immersion, water bodies are polluted becasue flowers and garlands are not removed from the idols.”

He said, “This harms the eco-system in the water bodies. So, we decided to collect flowers and garlands offered to the idols before immersion.”

Flowers and garlands thus collected will be used to make natural colours, which can be used to make all kinds of paintings, Jain added.

“We started collecting flowers and garlands not only from Ganesh Mandals but also from households so that an awareness about better environment is created. We have got very good response in the last four years,” Jain said.

“Colours can be derived easily by crushing the flowers and filtering out the pulp. They are first segregated and then different colours are derived from them, without any additives,” Jain said.
