A 70-year-old man was killed and jewellery worth Rs50,000 looted by a gang of five

In a robbery at Ambernath on Monday, a 70-year-old man was killed and jewellery worth Rs50,000 were looted by a gang of five, active in Thane district. Vasant Mhaske, 70, who runs a nursery in Ambernath was attacked by the five robbers at his residence on the Lok Nagri road.

Police arrested three ‘robbers’ Manya Junglya Waghe, 23, Gaurya Waghe, 33 and Ganesh Padya alias Madhular Waghe from their respective homes in the Barkupada area of Ambernath and claimed their involvement in the crime.

“As we received information about the robbery, we immediately started combing operations and arrested three persons, all of whom are known criminals. The other two are absconding,” said DCP Sanjay Enpure.

Mhaske lived with his wife Chandraprabha, 65 and two servants, who lived in servants’ quarter in his bungalow. At around 10 pm on Monday night, Mhaske had his dinner with wife Chandraprabha and then went to sleep in a room outside the main building, while Chandraprabha stayed back in the bedroom, watching television.

At around 10.30 pm five robbers entered the bungalow and assaulted Mhaske with bamboo sticks and choppers. They then entered the bedroom and also assaulted Chandraprabha. The dacoits took away all the gold jewellery that Chadraprabha was wearing at the time and Rs2000 in cash from the house.

Mhaske’s servants were locked from outside by the robbers. The servants, Baban Kamble and Suresh Jadhav, started screaming for help when they heard Mhaske’s screams as they could not come out to help him. Soon, the robbers fled. Finally, Chadraprabha opened servant’s door.

Mhaske was profusely bleeding and had suffered severe injuries in his head and back. Baban and Suresh took him to the bedroom and administered first-aid on him and Chandraprabha.

Mhaske’s son who stayed in another house nearby was informed, who took Mhaske to a private hospital. Since Mhaske’s condition was serious, he was shifted to the Ulhasnagar Central hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
