KOLKATA: Opposition within the ruling Left Front to chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya’s industrialisation drive has gained steam in the likelihood of mid-term polls.

Various factions of the Front and an increasing number of middle-level CPI(M) leaders are beginning to support CPI(M) general secretary, Prakash Karat, hoping that an early Lok Sabha poll may slowdown Bhattacharya, if not derail his wooing of private capital.

Karat’s statement “we have just few weeks to go to the people” issued on Monday has literally been taken to heart by the CPM’s minor allies in West Bengal- CPI, RSP and the Forward Bloc.

The allies now plan to step up opposition to projects which they helped stall. “Our agitation against Reliance retailing in agro products, chemical hub and agricultural land will turn more aggressive after the pujas,” said a leader of RSP, part of the `mini-Front’ that is against the chief minister’s drive for industrialisation.

The increasing belligerence between allies and middle level CPI (M) leaders is a result of the altered dynamics within the Left Front ever since the nuke deal rocked the UPA government.

Initially, the mini-Front within the party had preferred to toe the Bhattacharya-Jyoti Basu line of not rocking the government at the centre. They had been opposed to hardliner Karat’s policy then.

Some had even questioned his position within the party since foreign affairs had always been the portfolio of politburo member Sitaram Yechury.

But Buddha’s persistence on industrialisation has made the Left allies and comrades look forward to political instability in Delhi as a means to stall his resolve to continue with the industrialisation drive and in this respect are willing to support Karat.
