MUMBAI: The unidentified woman, who was found naked in a suburban train a few days ago, died in a local hospital.

"The lady was found near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminusby a constable in a semi-naked condition. She was found to have the shawl given to her at Titwala station draped around her. We took her to the nearby St George Hospital but she passed away this evening," a senior Railway Police official said.

He said the woman was not pregnant as mentioned in some reports but was suffering from some ailment which had caused her stomach to swell.

"To verify the identity of the woman, we called in the two Home Guards who had given her the shawl and they confirmed that it was the same woman," the official said.

The police are currently awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the cause of the death and some clues about the identity of the woman. They, however, denied there was any evidence to show she had been raped or physically assaulted and then left in the train.

"There is the possibility that she was suffering from a mental ailment and could be a beggar," the official said.

The woman had been found lying naked on the floor of a ladies' first class compartment in a Mumbai-Titwala train on the night of September 8 by a journalist who reported the incident a day later.
