NEW DELHI: Maharashtra chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh's off the cuff remarks while addressing farmers from Maharashtra along with union textile minister Shanker Singh Vaghela does not appear to have gone down well with the party.

In a rare departure from practice, the AICC spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan criticised the two functionaries for their remarks saying: "We condemn any derogatory remark made either against the farmers or the farming community."

The AICC usually supports party functionaries and it's rare that its spokespersons either criticise or censure their own.

Jayanthi Natrajan's observations are being viewed as an attempt by the party to limit the damage caused by the remarks.
The Congress seems to be embarrassed and though no action is contemplated, the party might decide to have a quiet word with the two.
