LUCKNOW: A recruitment scam unearthed in Uttar Pradesh (UP) gives an idea of how brazenly the entire government system could be hijacked by a few unscrupulous officials working at the behest of their political masters.

A large number of the over 22,000 constables recruited by the previous Mulayam government in 2005 and 2006 had submitted fake testimonials. An inquiry has revealed the cops were recruited after interviews that lasted a mere 20 to 30 seconds!
The Mayawati government has suspended 12 IPS officers, including an IG and nine DIGs, found guilty of large-scale irregularities in recruitment of constables during the Mulayam Singh regime. The services of as many as 6,500 cops recruited through 14 boards headed by these tainted officers have also been terminated.

Principal secretary (home) JN Chamber told reporters on Tuesday 18 additional SPs and 40 CO-level officials had also been found guilty. Over 22,000 constables were recruited by the Mulayam government through 55 boards between 2005 and 2006. The investigation into the recruitment of the remaining 15,000-plus constables would continue, Chamber said.

UP DGP Vikram Singh said chargesheets would soon be filed against the guilty. “The officers have been found guilty of criminal misconduct and FIRs would soon be lodged against them,” he said.

The inquiry, headed by Additional DG Special Task Force Shailja Kant Misra has unearthed irregularities which are brazen to say the least. While cases of fake high school certificates and caste certificates are galore, there are several instances in which entire answers have been entered in the answer sheets in a totally different handwriting.

“Tabulation sheets have been tampered with and there are numerous cases of cutting and overwriting in the marks given to candidates as also in the entries made during physical tests,” Shailja Kant later told DNA.

The government will start recruitment of constables afresh, an official spokesman said.
