CHENNAI: Commending the growing potential in Indian tennis, former Indian Tennis ace Vijay Amritraj on Sunday expressed the hope that at least a dozen of the current crop would get into the top 100 in the coming years.

"We need to have a slew of young boys and girls pushing each other into the top rankings due to competition that could result in some of them winning singles Grand Slam events," the former Davis Cup captain told reporters here on the sidelines of a promotional event organised by Havas Sport.

Stating that the potential had grown in the past half decade, he, however, called for high commitment levels from the aspiring players to win such laurels.

"Opportunities have grown of late but with them come great levels of responsibility and sacrifice which the players should be ready for," he said.

Acknowledging India's poor show in singles Grand Slam events he, however, ruled out any dearth of talent. While the game should be taken to more people, there should be efforts to spot out the "champions" from the current lot of players.

Though many of the players were improving at a fast rate, it was not in proportion to the international scenario.

He also commended the recent good show of Sania Mirza and advised her to take "right breaks" to keep herself fit. "She is off for a confident year-ending," he said.

India's latest tennis sensation, Mirza, is now ranked 27 in women's singles.

He also commended coaching strategies adopted in India, and added the game was changing.

On the possibilty of ace Indian duo Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi joining hands again, he just said: "it is their personal decision."
