Congress urged the minority community to stay away from the meeting

AURANGABAD: The convention, called by Anjuman-e-Tahafuz-e-Aukaf  on Friday at the Nehru auditorium on the issue of illegal grabbing of Wakf land, was held even as the local Congress unit urged the minority community to stay away from the meeting.

State BJP president Nitin Gadkari said that the corruption unleashed by the Congress-NCP led Democratic Front government was not just restricted to Wakf land grabbing but also to lands owned by other religious trusts.

Gadkari also expressed apprehension on government’s decision to constitute a judicial probe into the alleged cases of Wakf land grabbing and said that the delay in appointing the retired high court judge could well mean that crucial documents pertaining to the land deals may go missing from the state Wakf Board office in Aurangabad.

Gadkari said the BJP was not raising the issue just for the sake of getting minority votes and demanded that the government should bring out a status paper on the Wakf lands taken over by them.

Mohammad Hussain Khan, a member of the Aukaf Parishad, said the Congress has raked up the Sachar Commission report to woo the minorities. He however termed the report as a true reflection of the backwardness in the community.

BJP MLC Sayed Pasha Patel said that he would try and convince the Shiv Sena to withdraw its opposition to the implementation of the Sachar panel report. He added that the Congress-led government has tried to block the development of the community for years. However, state Wakf Board official said that 80 per cent of the lands have been illegally sold and that with a staff of 50 employees the Board cannot keep a check on management of all the Wakf properties in the state.

After the conference, a few people were seen distributing their clarification on the Wakf land grabbing.
