NEW DELHI: Concerned over reports that a TV expose purportedly showing a teacher forcing girls into prostitution was fake, government and opposition on Friday sought 'some kind of regulation' on the media.
Taking a serious view of the matter, Information and Broadcasting Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi warned TV channels of action if they were found resorting to unfair means to boost television ratings.
"Some channels just want to sensationalise news to gain TRPs. We will take action against them and the issue will be discussed," he said.
Dasmunsi's comments came at a time when he is engaged in consultations with broadcasters over the proposed Broadcast Bill, whose "content code" has become a matter of controversy for the media.
Favouring regulation of media, senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj, a former I&B minister, said the issue should not be restricted to sting operations alone.
"There should be a wide-ranging discussion on the mode of regulation and the regulator, on what all issues media should be held responsible," she said.
CPI secretary and Rajya Sabha member D Raja said sting operations should not be banned.
"Sting operations are needed to bring out certain hidden things. But some times they are proved to be wrong and for wrong reasons. So there must be some regulations," he said.
In a twist to the case in which the teacher was purpotedly shown forcing students into prostitution, Delhi Police today arrested the reporter who carried out the sting operation. The girl who allegedly appeared in the sting operation posing as a student was also arrested on Thursday.
