NEW DELHI: Delhi University Students' Union election on Friday passed off peacefully with about 35 per cent students exercising their franchise.

The polls, conducted as per the Supreme Court appointed Lyngdoh Committee recommendations, started around 8.30 am in the main campus of the university and the affiliated colleges.

"The election passed of peacefully and around 35 per cent students cast their vote," Chief Election Officer Prof Gurmeet Singh said.

The polling was also held in the afternoon in the evening colleges.

At least 32 candidates were in the fray for the posts of President, Vice-president, Secretary and Joint Secretary.

Student leader Abhishek Tandon, attributed the low turn out of voters to the fact that a huge number of candidates were screened out after the second scrutiny.

"We welcome the Lyngdoh committee recommendations. But it should have implemented right from the begining of the election process," he said.

The election authorities went for a second scrutiny of the candidates on August 27 on the basis of recommendations of the committee.

There was heavy police arrangement in the campus to ensure smooth conduct of the elections.
