NEW DELHI: NTPC Ltd is looking for an alternate site to the Badarpur thermal power station (BTPS) stage III. It has short-listed Rihand and some other sites in Uttar Pradesh for the purpose.

Sources said NTPC did not want to take up the stage III expansion at Badarpur in Delhi due to technical problems. “The third stage expansion of Rihand super thermal power project (STPP) has been included in the Eleventh Plan capacity addition programme of the company to replace the third stage of Badarpur,” said an official.

While Rihand would be brownfield (extension of an existing project) expansion, more than one greenfield (new) locations at other places in Uttar Pradesh have also been identified. Power from the project would, however, be supplied to Delhi. The stage III Rihand expansion would involve putting up an additional capacity of 500 mw for which NTPC has got a coal linkage form the ministry of coal last month. Feasibility study for the project would be completed shortly. The Centre  handed over the ownership of its BTPS, a loss-making power station in New Delhi, last year to NTPC for Rs 408 crore.

Source said NTPC had started pre-project preliminary activities for the main plant packages and was awaiting a clearance for water utilisation for the plant.  The second stage expansion of Rihand STPP in Sonebhadra, UP,  was completed in 2005.

This involved setting up of two units of 500 mw each. With the commissioning of the stage II, the installed capacity of the project was enhanced from 1,000 mw to 2,000 mw.

The company plans to use Rihand-Dadri Bipole transmission line for evacuation of power from the stage III of project to Delhi.
